DG29™ Bovine Pregnancy Tests Now Available From Genex in Canada
GUELPH, Ontario – Genex Cooperative, Inc. is marketing the DG29™ bovine pregnancy test in Ontario, Western Canada and the Maritimes. DG29 is an easy-to-use blood pregnancy test allowing producers to draw blood samples from their cattle on the farm or ranch, forward samples to a certified laboratory, and receive pregnancy diagnosis results quickly and accurately via fax or email.
The DG29 test, conducted Monday through Friday at Conception Laboratories in Beaumont, Quebec, utilizes ELISA technology to detect a specific pregnancy-related protein within the bovine’s blood sample. Based on the presence or lack of presence of a pregnancy-related protein, positive (pregnant) or negative (open) results are reported. DG29 has been shown to be over 98.7% percent accurate according to research published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal.
For best results, the test should be conducted on cows or heifers 29 days or more post breeding. Cows must also be at least 90 days post calving before blood samples are collected.
The DG29 test kits can be purchased in 24, 96 and 288-test packages. To purchase test kits or make inquiries about the test, contact your local Genex representative or call the Genex office in Guelph at 888-354-4622.
“This agreement between Genex and Conception for the commercialization of the DG29 test in the Canadian market is a logical extension of the partnership we already have in place with Genex and Cooperative Resources International (CRI) in the U.S. market,” says Dr. Paul Rouillier, president of Conception.
“The DG29 test is proving to be a tremendous reproduction tool on many farms and ranches. Dairy and beef producers throughout the U.S. have increasingly accepted DG29 as a method of early pregnancy diagnosis,” adds Tom Bjelland, vice president of strategic market development.
Genex is a subsidiary of CRI. The CRI mission statement summarizes the goal of CRI: “To provide products and services as effectively as possible to maximize the profitability of members and customers worldwide while maintaining a strong cooperative.”

Westgen and Conception Sign Partnership Agreement
Westgen and Conception – Animal Reproduction Technologies are pleased to report that they have signed a partnership agreement to promote and sell a suite of test products including the pregnancy test called DG29™. Conception, based in Beaumont Quebec, specializes in developing, producing and marketing new animal reproduction technologies. Westgen, based in Milner, British Columbia, is a leader for bovine genetic and reproductive technologies in Western Canada and is thus a logical strategic partner for Conception. "We are proud to rely on Westgen, a strong and creative partner to promote the DG29™ test in western Canada " states Paul Rouillier, President of Conception."
The DG29™ test in particular provides an economic opportunity for dairy and beef producers alike as it will allow them to identify and address open cows and heifers more quickly. "Reducing average days open on western Canadian dairies is a key objective for Westgen", claims Paul Meyer, the company's Sales and Marketing manager. "We know the extent to which reproductive performance influences profitability and take this responsibility seriously".
CONCEPTION supplies test kits with all materials needed for the collection of blood samples which are returned by the users to the lab via courier service (in 2 to 3 days from Western Canadian provinces). Blood samples are analyzed the day of their arrival at the lab and results are immediately faxed or emailed to the test users. The fact that all blood samples can be kept at summer and winter temperatures for at least one full week without jeopardizing the results, is an added benefit.
The most popular test offered by Conception, DG29™, evaluates for a specific protein only produced by pregnant bovine females. When the test is performed on day 29 or later post breeding, the accuracy is estimated to be 98.7%. Using the test allows open cows to be re-bred sooner – a key strategy in reducing average days open.
The partnership between Westgen and Conception takes effect January 1st 2012.

Alta Genetics Inc. renews DG29™ partnership agreement with Conception
Alta Genetics Inc. and Conception - Animal Reproduction Technologies are pleased to announce the renewal of the DG29™ partnership agreement. This contract renewal grants Alta continued distributor rights in Western Canada, Ontario and the Maritimes. “Over the last five years, Alta Genetics and Conception built a strong partnership and this was beneficial to both companies,” states Paul Rouillier, President of Conception. “As one of the first adopters of the DG29™ test in the Canadian market, Alta contributed greatly to Conception’s success and credibility.” Canadian Sales Manager, Ron Bird, states “this renewal allows Alta and Conception to continue to work together towards a common goal – improving herd profitability through delivery of high quality reproductive services and technology.”
Conception offers a turn-key solution to dairy and beef producers for pregnancy testing where blood sampling and shipping materials are all included in a kit. The DG29™ bovine pregnancy test requires one simple blood sample taken on day 29 after breeding. Blood samples drawn on farm are forwarded to Conception’s lab for analysis. Through detection of the DG29™ marker, a specific pregnancy protein, pregnancy diagnosis is determined. Results are returned to the producer both quickly and accurately.
Quick turnaround time allows animals to be re-entered into an artificial insemination or synchronization program sooner, which decreases days open and increases profits. The cost of added days open has been estimated to be in the range of $4 to $5 per day. At this rate, a 100 cow dairy that reduces its average calving interval by 10 days can increase revenue between $4000 and $5000 per year. Several thousand dairy producers across Canada already rely on DG29™ to detect early pregnancies in their cows and heifers.
Together, Alta and Conception are proud to offer added value services intended to improve reproductive performance and generate higher returns for dairymen.
