Note: You will notice that the saving on vet cost is very small compared to the increase in revenue associated with the number of decreased open days. Therefore we recommend not changing the frequency of your veterinarian visits, but to keep it the same along with the usage of DG29 in between visits. The decrease in calving intervals may be associated with the usage of DG29 totally or partially.

We currently milk 35 cows and since August 2003, we have been regular users of the DG29 test. The DG29 test has become part of our herd management as its effectiveness has been proven in our herd. We take full advantage of its daily availability to quickly identify open cows and re-inseminate them as early as possible. As for our females that test pregnant between day 29 and day 35, we simply keep observing them, and the lack of heat activity confirms that they are holding their pregnancy. We find the DG29 test effective and fast and it has contributed to getting to and maintaining our calving interval at 413 days.

We were among the first ones to use the DG29 test and we have trusted it since September 2002. Our herd counts 110 cows in production plus replacements. Our entire first round of pregnancy testing for cows and heifers, is done via DG29, adding up to over 700 tests to date. The ease, speed and reliability of the test have brought a great deal of flexibility and self management to our pregchecks. Confirmed pregnancies are however re-verified later in the gestation by our veterinarian in order to control embryo mortality. The winning formula for our farm is the combined usage of DG29 and our vet service; a combination that we do not intend to change.

In the past, we used to be very careful when preg-checking our embryo recipients and wait until at least day 50 of their pregnancy. However, in order to be able to get results quicker, we looked into using DG29. Under this particular scenario, the test quickly proved to be dependable.
Today, our first round of preg testing is always done with DG29. We have sent over 2000 DG29 tests, taken between 29 and 32 days after breeding and followed up with ultrasound. All animals identified open with DG29 are immediately put on a heat synchronization schedule and for most, re-inseminated within 72 hours. As for the ones tested pregnant, they are ultra-sounded between days 55 and 65 of their gestation in order to confirm that they are holding their pregnancy and there is no sign of embryo mortality. This program allows us a very tight following on our breeding, consequently optimizing our milk production and genetic gains.

DG29 is an additional herd management option in our herd. We use it particularly on cows that tend to repeat. Taking the blood sample is simple; results are submitted quickly and are easy to read. High producing cows are often harder to get in calf and require a higher level of management, these cases really benefit from the readily availability of DG29.

There are 32 milking cows at my farm. I use my veterinarian to preg check every 6 weeks and I use the pregnancy test from Conception in between his visits. When combining the vet services and the DG29 tests, I was able to reduce my calving interval by 10 days in only 8 months, as it went from 405 days to 395 days.
